    Invincibe? Maybe not..

    Aussies winning 2003 world cup

The Australian cricket team can be compared directly to greats such as Roger Federer, Tiger Woods and Valentino Rossi. All of whom absolutely dominate their respected sports. They have been painful and relentless in their pursuit for revenge in a successful Ashes whitewash, a truly emphatic display. Records have been broken, greats have retired. The story could not have been written any better.

After completely out playing the opposition in their initial One Day International encounters, the Aussies lost the unthinkable. They lost the one day series to a defiant England, or some would say. The English side was depleted with a string of injuries and a constant change in leadership becoming a common theme. The wheels were definitely falling off and Australia only needed to put the icing on the cake.

Instead Australia lost Andrew Symonds and fell apart even if it was only for two games in the final. One has to question the strength of this side and their resilience when England’s glass was obviously half full. This is a timely reminder to opposing teams who may have thought Australia was unbeatable. They are very much beatable in a one day game that contains so many different variables. Teams like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand and now England are very much contenders to win the world cup.

No one is invincible - finally the Aussies Cricketers have step back to Earth from their skyhigh pedestals!

Having said that however, I hope that the brilliance of the cricket team can be regenerated with all the young players and that Australia's amazing abilities don't just become a memory of the past.

    Interesting points raised!

However, a clear indication to see whether the Australian Cricket team are on the decline or not will be assessed on how they perform in the World Cup. (In front of a stage of millions of viewers worldwide.)

Its true that some people have labelled them as "unbeatable" but in most sports these days, you can never be 100% sure as the strangest things do happen!

    Quick question though:
Has the coach added more pressure on the Australian team by saying that " they need a contest"?

Very good read, keep up the good work!

I think your being a bit harsh there Silky. The Aus Team have earnt the right to call them selves number one and act in such a way that reflects their status, i think if it were india winning as many games, your cirtisim would not be so great.

The coach has put some pressure on the side but I think it was justified. Australia were going on to the park feeling like the opposition was there simply for the entertainment value. Knowingly they are doing there very best to compete but it just wasn't good enough.

There are some weak links in this new and younger side, will be interesting to see how they fair.

Australia have enormous depth and talent across the states and within the squad of 15, they will reach the semi finals of the world cup without a doubt.

Andrew Symonds will be available for selection during the business end of the world cup and he is crucial to the line up. While he may not play I believe Australia will still achieve a great result, the CB series is a meaningless series run just for the sake of the corporate dollar.

Watchout cricket world because ricky ponting will hit back - he will score heavily this world cup 2007

Seriously, Australia have had their time for almost 20 years. I'm glad their arrogance was punished during the 2005 Ashes and now in the Australian One-Day Series Final and and then again in New Zealand.

I would love to see Punter and Mr Cricket bowled for a duck and the Aussies get knocked out in the Semis or even better, the Final. I wouldn't even mind seeing McGrath get smashed for 0/70 of his 10 overs!

Don' t get me wrong, I love Australia and love supporting their teams, but for some reason the Australian Cricket teams just seems Un-Australian.

Let's face it, Warne and McGrath at his peak were irreplaceable. Now with Gilchrist and some of the others facing the end, finally world cricket can be exciting and less predictable again. Something we have not seen for nearly 20 years.
